Following our members satisfaction survey, we received some feedback about the accessibility of the committee members on Tuesday evening club nights, which threw up a range of views.

Some members felt the committee should not sit in the café as they didn’t want to approach them in case they were interrupting, but other members felt it was good to have them in the café as they were easy to find and speak to.

Some members felt that the committee should be based in the club office (Altyre Suite) on a Tuesday evening, but others were worried that they might be interrupting a meeting if they came in to the office to speak to a committee member.

Obviously there is not any one solution which suits everyone, so can all members please be aware that every committee member who is at Tollcross on a Tuesday evening can be approached at any time for information about the club, or just for a chat. It doesn’t matter if we are in the café, in the gallery or in the club office. Please do not worry that you are interrupting – it’s what we’re here for. You may sometimes find the office door closed, but that doesn’t mean there is a meeting in progress, and even if there is, the person you want to speak to will usually be able to come out. Please just come in.

Committee members will usually be wearing their blue club polo shirt so that they can be easily identified, so please come and say hello and ask about anything you need help with. Remember there’s no such thing as a silly question!

Marjorie Phillips

Please note that our club administrator, Cathie Robertson, will be on annual leave on Wednesday 5th and Thursday 6th June.

The Countdown Continues for LEN European Short Course Swimming Championships Glasgow 2019 as Official Mascot Bonnie The Seal is announced!

18959486 compressedThe LEN European Short Course Championships 2019 comes to Glasgow between 4-8 December 2019, where spectators will watch as European champions are crowned over five days of rip-roaring action. Europe’s finest swimmers will descend on the city to compete in no less than 40 short course events. The prestigious event which is held every two years, will take on further importance in 2019, as it marks the event’s 20th edition, at Glasgow’s Tollcross International Swimming Centre.

With triple Olympian Hannah Miley already confirmed as Official Championship Ambassador, another major announcement has just been made as Glasgow’s very own Bonnie The Seal was unveiled as the Official Championship Mascot.

Hannah Miley is one of the most decorated British swimmers of all time, having won multiple 400m Individual Medley titles at British, European and Commonwealth level. Miley’s resumé also includes world silver, whilst her fourth place finish at the Rio 2016 Olympics was just shy of a bronze medal while Bonnie The Seal makes a magnificent return after a much-loved stint as Glasgow 2018’s mascot.

Short course swimming is a fast-paced event and is guaranteed to have crowds energised from start to finish. Races are competed in a 25m pool, requiring swimmers to complete more turns, so crowds will see competitive, adrenaline-fuelled races – setting up this event as one of the most exciting of the year.

Tickets for the event are on sale NOW with the championships set to be a cornerstone event in Scotland’s 2019 sporting calendar.
The LEN European Short Course Championship 2019 is guaranteed to give the Scottish crowd unmissable entertainment. To grab your tickets before they are sold out, and for more event information, visit www.euroswim2019.com

As we are all aware our International Meet is fast approaching, I have been asked to recruit and organise the Kit Carriers for the event.

I am looking for swimmers who are aged 10+ who would be available for the evening finals sessions at Tollcross on 24-26th May.

This was a fantastic event for the kids last year as they got to meet some of their swimming heroes and had a lot of fun with their swimming friends. This year we will be welcoming many top swimmers including Duncan Scott, Ross Murdoch and Aimee Wilmott.

If your child would like to help at this fantastic event, please email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. with:

1 Childs name.

2 Squad.

3 What nights they are available to help.

When I have all the details I will put together a schedule of when the kids are needed and get back to everyone.

16-21 April 2019 – Tollcross International Swimming Centre, Glasgow

Sixteen City of Glasgow swimmers were in action at the 2019 British Championships at Tollcross International Swimming Centre, Glasgow. They were among 750 competitors from across the UK who were not only chasing medals but also qualification for a range of international selection events later this summer including the World Championships. Collectively, the squad contested 45 events reaching 12 finals, including four top 10 finishes and several junior and age group record breaking swims.

Katie Shanahan was the club's leading competitor and one of the top female junior athletes of the meet. In what would be a busy week of racing, Shanahan got things underway with a new Scottish Junior Record for the 400 Individual Medley when placing an impressive fifth place in the Open final. Her time of 4:46.62 broke the previous record of 4:47.01 set by Hannah Miley way back in 2005. The swim was also well within the consideration time for the European Junior Championships. In the shorter 200m medley event, Shanahan reached the Transition Final where she powered her way to victory in a new British Age Group 14 years and Scottish Junior record time of 2:15.29. The promising youngster then took on the 200m backstroke, where a personal best heat swim of put her into lane eight for the women's open final. Undeterred by the older more experienced opposition, Shanahan improved to seventh place, dropping her lifetime best to 2:13.68, a new Scottish Age Group 14 years record.

Glasgow Caledonian University student Emily Horne was close to her best ever form in the 50m butterfly, reaching the women's senior open final where she finished seventh in 27.43. Mark Ford also had a great meet, featuring in junior finals of the 100m butterfly, 50m backstroke and 200m backstroke, achieving personal best times in both of the longer events. Team-mate Max Hagan featured in junior finals of the 100 and 200m breaststroke events, gaining valuable experience in his debut at a meet of this level. Fellow breaststroke specialist Cameron Muir was pleased with his results, setting a personal best in the 100m race and reaching the Transition final of the 200m distance. The remaining finalist was Marc Elrick, who swam positively in the 100m butterfly to reach a very tightly contested Transition final.

Head Performance Coach, Ian Wright commented on the club's results: "This was a good week for the club. There were several excellent performances which the swimmers will now use to build on for the rest of the season. In particular, it was a break out meet for Katie Shanahan who seems to go from strength to strength competing well above her young years."

The club's performance swimmers will now turn their attention to the Glasgow International Swim Meet in five weeks' time and the major summer national events.

List of swimmers taking part: Katie Shanahan, Serena Iheagwaram, Emily Horne, Katie Taylor, Grant Henderson, Marc Elrick, Mark Ford, Ryan Robertson, Joe Watt, Craig Greenock, Cameron Muir, Max Hagan, Angus Nicol, Conor Massey, Marshall Illingworth, Ryan Brown.

cogstgradedI’d like to say a huge thank you to everyone who helped to make our Long Course Graded Meet such a success at the weekend:

To all the volunteers who came along over the weekend and marshalled, supervised warm ups/swim down pool, sold entry bands, staffed tombola, gave out medals, ran live results, printed, photocopied, and staffed entrances to galleries etc – we couldn’t run the meet without you.

Special thanks to Brian, Ross and Stewart for Meet Management and AOE – they did a great job in the run up to the meet and keeping things running smoothly all weekend in the glass box, and not forgetting Allison who dealt with the huge number of COGST entries to the meet.

To Ian Faulds for spending all weekend as announcer.

To our swimmers who did a great job as runners, selling start sheets, giving out sweets and even a bit of marshalling and stewarding.

Thanks to Lyndsey, Gerry and Tommy and all of their staff at Tollcross for their help over the weekend.

To WrightSport for running the swim shop.

To Janice Morgan and all of the other technical officials who gave up their weekend to support us.

Finally, thanks to all the coaches and swimmers from both COGST and the 36 other clubs who came along and supported the meet. We hope you enjoyed it, got lots of PBs and will come back next year!

Marjorie

gbryceMy name is Gillian Bryce. I am a parent and committee member of the City of Glasagow Swim Team.

I have decided to cut my hair to kick start our fundraising for the Johnstone Shearer Memorial Swim Meet and the Beatson who helped look after Jono.

My hair will also be donated to the little Princesses who make wigs for children who have hair loss due to medical conditions. Once my hair is cut I am then going to bravely have it shaved for 1 of our mums and fellow committee member Gerry Lawlor who is quite unwell just now.

My hair is 31” from root to end, I have been growing it for a few years now. There will be 24” donated.

Johnstone (Jono) was one of our young coaches and he swam for us when he was younger. We were all saddened by his passing this is the reason we hold the Memorial Swim Meet to keep his memory alive.

I will have my hair cut by my friend Joanna in the Foyer of Tollcross Pool on Tuesday the 7th May 2019 at 7pm.

You can donate at Gofundme, any of the money tins and can collect a sponsor sheet to pass round friends, family or work collegues.

So please come along and help support me and the club, If you can’t we will be live streaming it on our facebook page.
