Congratulations to COGST swimmer Gavin Roberts who has been selected for the Scotland West team at the GB Special Olympics which will be taking place in Sheffield from 7th-12th August.

This year’s Games – which are held every four years – will be the biggest disability sports event in the country in 2017, with 2,600 athletes from across England, Scotland and Wales taking part in 20 different sports.

Gavin will be competing in 100 Breaststroke, 100 IM, 200 Free and 400 Free and will also be swimming in the 4x100 Freestyle relay.

Good Luck to Gavin and all of the Scotland West Team!

The 2017 British Summer National Championships took place in Sheffield from the 25-30 July.

Twenty-six swimmers from City of Glasgow Swim Team descended on Ponds Forge International Sports Centre to battle it out with competitors from over 300 other swimming clubs from across the UK, winning a total of 10 medals, after reaching 35 finals and setting 29 new personal best times from a total of 109 swims.

Thirteen-year-old Katie Shanahan and fourteen-year-old Mark Ford were among the leading competitors after capturing double gold. Shanahan, swimming largely against girls a year older than her, demonstrated all round strength by claiming gold in both 200m and 400m Individual Medley races in the 13/14 years category. Her times of 2:21.76 and 4:56.89 were both new 13 years Scottish age group records. She also placed sixth in the 400m Freestyle and 200m Backstroke, seventh in the 200m Freestyle and tenth in the 800m Freestyle.

Ford, a new pupil at the Glasgow School of Sport, captured the 13/14 years 50m and 100m Backstroke events against very strong opposition, later adding a hard fought bronze medal in the 100m Butterfly and fourth place in the 200m Backstroke. All his swims were new personal best times.

Emily Horne provided one of the highlights of the week with a surprise win in the Girl’s 19/over 50m Butterfly after posting a brilliant personal best time of 27.03 in a nail biting finish. The time now ranks Horne as the second fastest Scot in history for the event.

Rapidly improving Serena Iheagwarem swam in the Girl’s 15 years section and raced strategically to take the win and gold medal in the 200m Butterfly in 2:17.04. She also placed ninth in the 200m Backstroke.

In the Multi-Class Para events, Andrew Mullen put in a great performance to knock over one second off his best time and set a new European record for the S5 50m Backstroke of 36.20. The time was well within the consideration standard for the IPC World Championships in October and for good measure he also placed first in the 50m Butterfly.

Experienced senior backstroke swimmer Craig McNally swam well to secure double bronze in the 19/over category from podium swims in the 50m (25.78 personal best time) and 100m Backstroke, as well as a fourth place finish in the 200m distance.

The Club also performed well in some of the relay events, progressing to three finals, including an excellent fourth place in the Girl’s 17/over 4x100 Freestyle (Camilla Hattersley, Anna Fleming, Emily Horne, Gulsum Onal) with the same four girls combining for ninth in the medley relay. However, the Boys 14-16 years medley team of Ryan Robertson, Max Hagan, Mark Ford and Angus Nicol went even better, with all four putting in brilliant swims to clinch a surprise but well deserved bronze medal.

Lauren Wetherell, another recent new start at the Glasgow School of Sport, put in some excellent performances in the 15 years girl’s freestyle events in her first appearance in this meet. Solid efforts placed her eighth in the 800m Freestyle and ninth in the 200m and 400m distances. Wetherell’s School of Sport compatriot Ryan Robertson was also competing in the competition for the first time and gained valuable experience by reaching the finals of the Boy’s 15 years 100m and 200m Backstroke events (seventh and ninth respectively).

In the Girl’s 19/over section, Camilla Hattersley swam well to place fourth in the 400m I.M. but was disappointed with her swims in the 800m and 400m Freestyle events (fourth and seventh place). Newcomer to Glasgow, Gulsum Onal reached the final of the 100m Freestyle finishing tenth in 56.74. In the Boy’s 19/over events, Ryan Brown put in a solid swim in the 200m Butterfly placing fifth in 2:01.50.

Angus Nicol and Max Hagan both made the final of the Boy’s 16 years 50m Breaststroke, returning with best ever times and eighth and seventh place respectively. Nicol also raced his way to the final of the 100m Freestyle, finishing tenth in 54.31. In the corresponding Girl’s age group, Emma Scully made it to the final of the 200m Backstroke, securing tenth place overall.

Other swimmers racing in Sheffield were: Connor Massey (50m Backstroke), Conor Logan (50m Backstroke, Relay), Joe Watt (50m, 100m Backstroke, Relays), Greg Watson (100m Backstroke), Andrew McFadzean, Nathan McGraw, Lawrence Campbell, Gregor Swinney, Martin McInnes (all relays) were the other City swimmers in action in Sheffield.

Head Performance Coach, Ian Wright commented on the club’s results: “This year’s results at the British Summer Championships show a marked improvement over last year. We won at least one medal every day and it was fantastic to see so many Glasgow swimmers making an impact at this level. I must commend all the coaches who’ve worked with these swimmers over the year for the effort they’ve put in to achieve this, especially Danielle Brayson, Moureen McDonald and Heather Albin.”

The majority of Glasgow swimmers will now enjoy a summer break from the sport before returning to training at the end of August. However, watch out for Camilla Hattersley racing at the World University Games from 21st to 29th August and Mark Deans in the Faros Marathon swim at the end of the month!

Scotstoun pool will reopen to the public from Monday 17th of July after being closed to carry out essential work to the swimming pool and to install a new electronic self-serve entry system which will be rolling out across all Glasgow Life venues in the near future.

The new entry system will allow users to enter the building to use the facilities more efficiently whilst still logging in for classes or to use the gym or pool facilities.

All City of Glasgow swimmers using the Scotstoun pool facilities on a regular basis will be issued with entry cards to allow them to navigate through the electronic gates on arrival for their training sessions. Squad coaches will issue the cards from next Tuesday 18 th of July to the relevant squad members. Wrist bands will be available if preferred for a small cost at the pool reception if anyone wishes to purchase.

Any swimmers that don’t receive their cards will still be able to enter the building at present as a Glasgow Life staff member will be available at the entry point to assist.

waterpoloTuesday 18th July and Tuesday 25th July
7:00pm-8:30pm Tollcross International Swimming Centre

Water Polo matches are played in swimming pools with two teams, each with seven players (six outfield player and a goalkeeper) and six substitutes. The concept is very similar to football - there are goals at each end of the pool and the winner is the team who has scored most by the full time whistle. Play is divided into quarters, each eight minutes in duration. Water Polo is a physically demanding game - nobody is allowed to touch the bottom while the game is in play and players can cover around three kilometres in a match.

All members aged 10-17 years old are welcome to come along to the taster sessions.

Please sign up for the sessions by emailing: This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
