A large contingent of City of Glasgow’s best swimmers were in excellent form at the 2017 Scottish National Age Group Championships in Aberdeen from 29 March - 2 April. The squad of over fifty athletes placed a very creditable fourth overall in the top club rankings, returning with an impressive haul of 71 medals (23 gold, 21 silver, 27 bronze) and five new Scottish national age group records.

Twelve year old Katie Shanahan was the club’s leading performer winning no less than ten gold and one silver medal in the girl’s 13/under section. Shanahan’s titles came in the 100, 200, 400, 800m freestyle, 50, 100, 200m backstroke, 100m breaststroke and the 200 and 400m IM events, with a further silver in the 200m butterfly. The promising 12-year-old also set new Scottish national age group records with quality performances in the 200m freestyle (2:09.28), 200m backstroke (2:22.17) and 400m IM (5:04.34).

Glasgow were particularly strong in the boys 19/over category. Commonwealth finalist and UWS undergraduate Craig McNally was one of those in winning form after securing both 100m and 200m backstroke titles. Distance ace and University of Strathclyde student Chris Lowther went one better, securing a hat-trick of wins in the 400m IM, 400m freestyle and 800m freestyle events. Martin McInnes, Jack McComish and Cameron Park all won one boy’s 19/over event each. McInnes captured the 200m freestyle in a lifetime best of 1:55.71, McComish took the 50m breaststroke, while Park claimed the 100m breaststroke event in a career best of 1:06.30 as well as a further silver and three bronze medals.

New recruit Lauren Wetherell made an immediate impression with an impressive swim to take a brace of gold medals in the girl’s 15 years section, capturing both 800m and 1500m freestyle distance titles. Wetherell is relocating from her current base in Florida, USA to join City of Glasgow and will take up a position at the Glasgow School of Sport in June. Wetherell will be hoping to follow in the footsteps of 2016 Olympian Camilla Hattersley who was on hand to pick up the girl’s 19/over 800m freestyle event. The University of Glasgow scholar just raced once in Aberdeen as part of her preparations to for the British Championships and World Trials later in April.

The remaining individual gold medallist was Glasgow School of Sport athlete Ryan Robertson who swam to the gold medal in the boy’s 15 years 100m backstroke as part of a series of fantastic swims throughout the week that also earned him one silver and two bronze medals.

In the 17/over relays, McNally, McComish, Park and Joe Watt teamed up to strike gold in the 4x100m medley event. Duncan McKinney switched places with Watt in the 4x200m freestyle relay that took silver, while in the 4x100m freestyle, the quartet of Park, McInnes, Lawrence Campbell and Grant Henderson combined for a bronze medal podium finish. Watt also collected a brace of individual bronze medals in the 17/18 years 100m and 200m backstroke events, whist Henderson grabbed double 19/over silver for his efforts in the 50m and 100m freestyle races.

With over 400 swims in five days and almost 200 personal best times there were too many swims to single out all the outstanding ones. However, some of the other noteworthy performances included a four-time silver medal haul from Serena Iheagwarem in the girl’s 15 years age group, while in the 13/under section, eleven-year-old Saskia Wade impressed many onlookers with bronze medals in the 50m freestyle and 100m breaststroke. In addition, her swims in the 50m freestyle (28.20) and 50m breaststroke (36.91) were both new 11 years Scottish national age group records.

In the 13/under section, Tony Anderson made huge improvements and gained lots of confidence with a series of excellent swims that included two bronze medal finishes, while the 13/u girls relay quartet of Shanahan, Wade Elise McQueenie and Gianna Ajmone swam brilliantly to pick a bronze medal brace of their own.

Head Performance Coach, Ian Wright commented on the club’s results: “The Scottish Age Group Championships is always a tough meet over five long days and our team rose to the challenge really well producing some first class performances. Our established athletes got the job done as expected but more pleasing was seeing the breakthrough of a new wave of talented youngsters at this level. I must commend our age group coaching team on a job well done, they’ve brought many of these swimmers on massively in the last twelve months. We will now look to build on this excellent result as the season progresses and aim for even better swims at the major summer meets.”

Please could all swimmers/parents who train at Tollcross note that swimmers must never leave their belongings, even just for a few minutes, in unattended cubicles or open lockers. This applies at all times of the day no matter how busy the venue is or whether there is public access or not. Please do not place your belongings in a cubicle and then disappear for a shower or to your training session. Always take all of your belongings in a bag on to poolside or leave them in a securely fastened locker.

In addition, during the use of the training pool, in the evening sessions where there is high public use for lessons and general swimming, COGST swimmers should use the showers and cubicles in the main training village, where the staff will open up several aisles for this purpose. At morning training, the changing area and showers adjacent to the pool should be used.
