28 June to 1 July 2018, Tollcross International Swimming Centre, Glasgow
City of Glasgow swimmers are celebrating after earning the prestigious title of Scotland’s top club when winning the overall team trophy at the Scottish National Open Championships last week in the famous Tollcross pool! The squad (a record 55 strong) produced some fantastic performances to finish with a total of 18 medals (5 gold, 8 silver and 5 bronze) and 50 finals from 334 swims (including 70 personal best times) helping the club finish top of the final club points rankings for the first time in their history!

Promising junior swimmer Katie Shanahan was one of the leading swimmers capturing an impressive Scottish Open title in the 400 IM, three Scottish Senior titles (200 IM, 400 IM, 200 Backstroke) and four Scottish Junior titles (200 IM, 400 IM, 200 Backstroke, 400 Freestyle). For good measure, her times in the 200 and 400 IM were both new 14 years Scottish Age Group records.

Further Scottish Senior titles were won by Emily Horne (50 Butterfly), Marshall Illingworth (1500 Freestyle) and Ryan Brown (200 Backstroke), with Brown also collecting the silver medal in the 200 Butterfly. In addition, Martin McInnes was awarded the ‘Eileen Adams Trophy’ (a trophy very special to City of Glasgow Swim Team named in honour of the club’s former head coach) for the best combined performance in the Men’s 200 and 400m Freestyle events after winning silver in the 400 and placing sixth in the 200.

As well as Shanahan’s four wins, there were more Scottish Junior titles for Mark Ford (50, 100, 200 Butterfly, 100 Backstroke), Lauren Wetherell (200 and 1500 Freestyle).

Relay teams played a big part in the overall success with the club reaching the relay podium on five occasions, as well as claiming three Scottish Junior relay titles. Silver medals came from the Senior ‘A’ team (Horne, Gülsüm Önal, Anna Fleming and Robyn Crawford) in the Women’s 4x100 Freestyle and the Junior team (Shanahan, Wetherell, Serena Iheagwaram and Elise McQueenie) in the Women’s 4x200 Freestyle, which also claimed the Junior title and set a new Scottish Junior record time of 8:37.44.

The Senior Women’s 4x200 team (Horne, Önal, Fleming and Kirsty Griffiths) took bronze behind the Juniors and these were backed up by further bronze medal winning relays from the Senior ‘A’ team in the Men’s 4x100 Freestyle where McInnes, Grant Henderson, Joe Watt, and Gregor Swinney combined to good effect and the 4x100 Medley where Watt, Brown, Henderson and Cameron Muir were the successful quartet. In addition, both Junior Medley teams won the Scottish Junior titles.
The club was well represented in the multi-classification para-swimming events with Louis Lawlor and Gavin Roberts both having outstanding meets. Lawlor secured gold medal swims in the 50, 100, 200 Freestyle events as well as the 50 Backstroke, while Roberts picked up silver after a determined swim in the 100 Breaststroke. Lawlor’s performances in the 50 & 100 Freestyle and 50 Backstroke were all new Scottish Para-Swimming records for the S14 category.

Head Performance Coach, Ian Wright commented on the club’s results: “The team is absolutely delighted to win the overall top club award at this meet. It had been one of our longer-term goals but it was not something we expected to happen so soon. It was a week where both our senior and junior swimmers were strong, with several athletes breaking through at this level for the first time. We will now look to continue the good form at the Scottish and British Summer Meets later this month.”
