Performance Swimming Section

There are three levels within our Performance section of the swim team. As the swimmer moves into the Performance section of the swim team they are expected to learn and display all aspects of a performance athlete’s lifestyle. Within the Junior Performance squad the swimmers will learn about what it takes to progress their swimming. There are several qualities the swimmers will learn to adopt within the performance groups these are:

  • Nutrition
  • Injury Management
  • Time Management
  • Balanced Lifestyle
  • Team Ethos
  • Desire to Succeed
  • Goal Setting and Realising their Goals

As most swimmers within these squads will be maturing then the attendance levels will be set by the squad coach however if the swimmer is not achieving the minimum then the squad coach will discuss this with the Head Coach. The time each swimmer spends within each group depends on the individual swimmers commitment to their programme and their performance levels. It is a requirement of this squad that all swimmers participate fully in the competitive season. It is expected that any swimmer selected to represent the swim team in relays will accept their position. If a swimmer declines their position one more than one occasion then they may not be selected for relays for the remainder of the season. Land training will be developed through these squads and individual swimmers may be required to complete land work at home should they require some additional training.

There are four squads providing a clear pathway for our swimmers to develop a performance athlete’s lifestyle. These are:

Development Swimming Section

There are three levels within our development section of the swim team. As the swimmer progresses through each level it is expected they will increase the amount of exposure to their skill and technical development. The squads are designed to introduce, develop then consolidate all aspects of competitive swimming. The time each swimmer spends within each group depends on the individual swimmers commitment to their programme and the age banding for each group is set as a guide. It is expected that when a swimmer progresses to the next level they will start with the lower recommendation of the attendance level and move to the upper level as they progress their training. The competition guide has been established to allow full exposure to the range of competitive races. It is not expected that the swimmers will race these events every competition and the swimmers will be advised by their coaches the best combination of events to enter each competition. Land training will be introduced to the youngest members of our team to establish good flexibility and posture alignment to assist the swimmer as they mature. Establishing sound body awareness at this early stage may reduce possible injuries in the future.

Club Swimming Section

There are two levels within our Club Squad section of the swim team. The citywide curriculum has been developed to improve both technical skills and aerobic fitness. This section of the swim team welcomes any swimmer who cannot commit to the formal expected criteria of the other groups within the team but still has the desire to train up to three/five sessions per week. The senior club squad will include the masters section of the swim team which allows for both short and long course training weekly. The club squad swimmers will have several options available as part of this group. Firstly if a swimmer is attending the five sessions and is competing at the required standard the swimmer can request the opportunity to join a performance group. Subject to an agreed trial period authorised by the Head Coach. Secondly, all swimmers in the club groups will have the opportunity to volunteer at club events to support the club. Thirdly, the senior club swimmers will be advised of any STO, Team Manager or swimming courses within the area should they wish to develop other skills within the sport. The squad coach will be responsible for developing both the swimming skills and also the squad spirit therefore social events will be offered to this group throughout the year. Finally all swimmers within this squad are encouraged to opt into the competitive events throughout the year subject to entry requirements. Entry will be made using the current system. However should any swimmer wish to opt out of competitive events no entry form will be produced, if the swimmer decides to opt back in then this will be fully supported by the club.
